Stellenbeschreibung
Institute of Environmental Engineering
At CellX Biosolutions, we are an innovative ETH spin-off startup at the forefront of environmental sustainability, aiming to revolutionize pollution remediation through advanced microbial technologies. By harnessing the power of nature, we develop bacterial solutions that degrade persistent environmental pollutants such as PFAS and pharmaceuticals. We are seeking a dedicated Biotechnologist / Microbiologist to join our dynamic team and help push the boundaries of bioremediation technologies.
You will work in our lab in the ETH Zurich Hönggerberg campus. You will be an employee of ETH Zurich within the Stocker lab | Environmental Microfluidics Group with all the associated benefits as this position is linked to a grant funding acquired at ETH. You might have the possibility to join the startup entity starting summer 2026.
Our project focuses on expanding the bacterial degrader library and validating these communities’ ability to degrade complex pollutants across aquatic, soil, and sediment environments. By leveraging high-throughput screening and biotechnological processes, we are building scalable solutions for tackling industrial and environmental waste. This role is essential in supporting laboratory work, microbial cultivation, and screening processes that are key to achieving our project milestones.
As a Biotechnologist / Microbiologist, you will play a vital role in the development of microbial communities targeting environmental pollutants. Your work will include bacterial cultivation, molecular and metabolic analysis, high-throughput screening, and bioreactor experiments. Key tasks include:
Conducting bacterial cultivation, screening and enrichments for pollutant degradation.
Preparing and processing microbial samples for analysis using the BioLector micro-cultivation system and LC-MS/MS pipelines.
Managing microbial cultivation and bioreactor operations for proof-of-concept trials.
Supporting the development and deployment of technologies for capturing microbial communities from various environments.
Collaborating with multidisciplinary teams to optimize biodegradation strategies.
Contributing to the genomic and metabolic characterization of microbial consortia.
Analyzing experimental data using R and other statistical tools to ensure accurate interpretation.
Preparing and presenting analyzed data to peers and project stakeholders for discussion and review.
The position begins in January 2025 and is secured through June 2026, with the possibility of contract renewal afterward, though it is not guaranteed at this time.
MSc in Microbiology, Biotechnology, Environmental Sciences, or a related field, preferably with experience in microbial consortia design and/or bioprocess design and optimization.
2+ years of experience in microbial cultivation and bioprocessing.
Hands-on experience with classical microbiology, fermentation technologies, bioreactors, and analytical techniques (e.g., flow cytometry).
Strong knowledge of molecular biology, including DNA extraction, primer design, (q)PCR, and 16S rRNA sequencing.
Proficiency in R and experience in analyzing large datasets for biological research.
English level C1
Ability to conduct comprehensive literature reviews and stay up-to-date with the latest research in the field.
Ability to analyze, interpret, and present data to peers.
Collaborative team player with excellent communication skills.
Ability to foster a culture of trust and open communication.
Emphasis on proactivity, independence in work, but also accountability and responsibility in achieving project goals.
Flexibility and adaptability to evolving project needs.
Focus on personal and professional growth through self-reflection and development.
